Yard Sale? Busted!

Garage Sale Gestapo

We’re downsizing. But if we want to sell our own stuff, on our own property, we need permission from the government. If they think we’re having a garage sale they can come on our property to check.

I’d never be the kind of inconsiderate neighbor with the eternal yard sale. But if I was, shouldn’t my neighbors address this with me instead of getting the county to adopt an ordinance? I suppose some people are more comfortable with this kind of passive-aggressive behavior than with direct honesty about how my yard sale might affect their lives.

I complained about the garage sale permit requirement, and my son-in-law said “It’s really not that big a deal.”

No, not compared to being imprisoned in Siberia. Or forced to wear an armband because of my religion. I bet someone thought the armband thing wasn’t a big deal either. But anyway…

It may not be that big a deal, but I’m not playing along.

Here’s how we’ll liquidate without a garage sale:

  • Craigslist
  • eBay
  • Decluttr
  • OfferUp
  • Red Door Consignment
  • Half Price Books (planned)
  • GunBroker.com
  • Ott Gun Works walk-in/Facebook
  • Intentional gifting to family
  • Goodwill donation
